A day off: midwife's appointment with Mel in the morning; followed by a trip to a baby superstore; Ikea for a wardrobe for the nursery and then dentist in the afternoon.

Ikea was, as ever, fun. Especially when we realised that the wardrobe we'd chosen wouldn't fit in the car. Cue us emptying the box in the car park and solving a tesselation problem Rubik would be proud of.

The trip to the dentist, however, discounted the theory that travelling to Ikea is worse than getting your teeth pulled. Unfortunately I have, it seems, a "touch" of gingivitis. Cue me drinking TCP as my tipple of choice from now on.

Being in the flat at least means a chance to catch up with the diary. No annoying Internet connection to get distracted with, either.

There's a strong suspicion that the very cool Nokia 770 is going to be released on Monday, 3rd October. A little after 3Q but with the vibrant, open way it's been developed I'm willing to let that go. May have to liquidate my Series 7, netBook, some old Series 5mxes and any other Psions/gadgets to get one (with a Bluetooth keyboard) assuming a decent conversion rate from the expected $350 - and it's as good in person as the specs suggest:

  • About the size and weight of a Psion Revo (bit shorter, bit deeper)800x480 65,536 colour screen
  • Linux
  • X
  • 802.11b/g
  • Bluetooth (no GSM/GPRS - use your mobile in your pocket for that)
  • Open platform

Tempted to try porting some apps to it: the tutorial on porting "Hildon"ises gaim. How cool is that?

Curry night in Wetherspoon's with John. Andrew turned up later (he hadn't realised Mel was pregnant) and then Greg arrived. Very enjoyable.

Everyone very tired from last night's late finish, but a good end to the course. It could've done with being another day, though.

The first day of the FLA Foundation course was actually very interesting. Helped, of course, by the fact that our team won free drinks vouchers - not that they were needed...

Found a very cool thing: Oolite is an open source remake of Elite using OpenGL for Mac OS X (with Linux & Windows ports). Quick bit of bouncing backwards and forwards between Isinor and Quitiri (furs & computers) and I've got a military laser, ECM, large cargo bay, extra energy unit etc. Look very pretty, but could do with more things just going on their merry way in a system.

Driving home from Redhill took almost exactly one hour less than the drive down on Monday morning. Hopefully avoiding the M1 next time will mean being in the office before 10am. The flat's decent enough, and a 5 minute walk to work means I can easily make up the late arrival on a Monday morning.
