mud has built its first deb: cal(1). OK, not particularly complex but dependency following for Debian-sourced packages should be working.

Main areas next to focus on:

  • Auto-Maemoification of debian/control, such as setting the section to start "user/" and adding an X-Maemo-Icon field.
  • Tarball fetcher.
  • autotools builder.
  • Dependency specification for autotools-based projects.

Wow. Both the AppleTV and the iPhone are announced at MacWorld. The iPhone doesn't meet my requirements (screen resolution's too small, third party software locked out, not cheap) however the interface looks beautiful and well-thought out. Some of the features show just the level of thought that's gone in to it: auto-rotation and turning off touch screen when bringing it up to your face are just two. Multitouch still looks lovely. If I didn't already have my 770 and my Gmini, and it a) was available in the UK; b) had 3G; c) was cheaper, it'd be something to seriously consider.

Hopefully this will encourage companies like Nokia to really start thinking radically for interfaces on their Internet Tablets and phones. Sometimes they're just a bit too carried away with existing desktop metaphors.

Well, it's official, Nokia have released the N800 Internet Tablet. There's also going to be a developer device programme: I missed out on the 770's one, but hopefully my work for the platform, including Sylpheed, VidConvert, 770-encode, application catalogue updates and help & assistance will be enough to secure me a place on their selection list.

Just in case, however, I've been spurred (by so many others) to push out things I'd been sitting on, like ArcEm, NetSurf, galculator and, most importantly perhaps, mud.

More worrying, though, are their plans for OS 2007 compatibility on the 770. We may well end up with forks, ports and automoa split community.

Oops, CompUSA have broken the sales embargo on the Nokia N800, so people are getting the device and reporting on it. This probably spoils, somewhat, Nokia's marketing team's carefully planned launch (presumably at CES, next week).

However much it may annoy their other retailers, though, it's acted as a wonderful guerilla marketing trick - it's easy to imagine news getting buried with both CES and the MacWorld keynote next week.

It looks like a decent evolution of the 770, but not worth £260 to upgrade.

Switched back to Freevo from MythTV: much quicker and almost as pretty with my new Panorama theme/skin.

Monday, 01 January 2007

New Year! New update to stop the diary breaking. Actually did something today, though. Sent two patches upstream for Freevo to help me shift back from MythTV to Freevo. Anamorphic skins will be nice (I may even port back MythCenter-wide). Also continued discussions about duplicate programme detection, so that when BBC 3 shows the same episode of Torchwood twenty times in one week, only one gets recorded.

Speaking of Torchwood the last three episodes (two of which were edited together and broadcast with no break this evening) were really quite good. Especially the last 30 seconds of End of Days.
